The decision by the Congress-led Karnataka government to allocate an additional Rs 10 crore to victims of the Wayanad landslide tragedy in Kerala has stirred political debate. Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya criticized the move, questioning the government’s accountability and priorities. He highlighted issues like water scarcity, poor infrastructure, and farmer distress within Karnataka.
Surya raised concerns about the government’s decision to spend funds from Karnataka on relief efforts in Kerala, terming it as an election tactic. The BJP Karnataka unit accused the Congress government of financial mismanagement, alleging that essential workers were not being paid while money was allocated for Wayanad. The opposition parties criticized the government for prioritizing political gains over the welfare of Karnataka’s residents.
The Janata Dal (Secular) also expressed reservations, pointing out that many in Karnataka are struggling for basic necessities while resources are directed towards Wayanad’s rehabilitation. The BJP criticized the governance as being influenced by the high command and viewed the allocation as a betrayal of Kannadigas. Last year, Rs 10 crore was granted for housing construction in Wayanad post-landslide, with similar allegations of political appeasement.
