Karnataka’s Additional Chief Secretary of the Energy Department, Gaurav Gupta, initiated a mobile van awareness campaign in Bangalore to promote the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. This campaign aims to encourage the installation of rooftop solar systems across the state. The initiative is part of the ongoing “Month of Solar – May 2026” campaign, focusing on raising awareness about rooftop solar energy systems and the benefits they offer.
Gaurav Gupta mentioned that the 15-day awareness campaign will cover major cities like Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mangaluru, Hubballi-Dharwad, and Kalaburagi. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is driving the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana nationwide to promote rooftop solar power systems for domestic consumers. Bangalore Electricity Supply Company is leading the awareness activities, implementation, and monitoring of the scheme in Karnataka.
Under the scheme, Karnataka has already installed 19,293 rooftop solar systems with a total capacity of 77.5 MW. In Bangalore alone, 7,992 solar systems have been commissioned, generating a combined capacity of 35.57 MW. The scheme offers consumers long-term financial benefits and the opportunity to contribute to environmental sustainability by exporting surplus electricity to the grid.
The mobile vans used in the campaign will showcase videos, animations, and beneficiary testimonials in Kannada and English through LED screens. The goal is to enhance public understanding of the scheme and encourage more people to participate. Domestic consumers are eligible for subsidies ranging from Rs 30,000 to Rs 78,000 based on the capacity of the rooftop solar system they install.
