Karnataka Police have detained a 27-year-old individual in Hubballi for sharing a WhatsApp status that was deemed disrespectful to Hindu beliefs. The suspect, Dadapir Hebballi, from Noorani Flats, Hubballi, faces legal action after posting a video on his status showing a YouTuber reciting the Kalma before a Hindu deity, sparking public outrage. Authorities took swift action to maintain law and order following the incident, with investigations ongoing.
In a separate incident in Hubballi in 2022, violent clashes erupted over a contentious social media post, resulting in property damage and injuries to police officers. The situation led to the arrest of 40 individuals, with heightened security measures implemented for four days to restore calm.
Recently, in Udupi, two youths were arrested for a social media post mocking an interfaith marriage, aiming to stoke religious discord. The post, shared in May 2025, targeted a Hindu-Muslim couple from Karkala, prompting legal action under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for inciting public mischief and abetting an offense.
