KEM Hospital and Seth G.S. Medical College have placed MBBS student Sejal Pawar on a 15-day forced leave due to a viral social media video where she allegedly made objectionable remarks during a stand-up comedy show. Pawar has been handed over to her family following discussions with the administration and her parents, who are distressed by the incident. She has apologized to her family for the controversy.
A preliminary inquiry by the institution confirmed Pawar’s presence in the video and deemed her remarks inappropriate. Consequently, she is barred from entering the hospital, medical college campus, or hostel, and participating in any academic or extracurricular activities for the next 15 days. The administration is concerned about her mental well-being and has advised counseling to prevent depression or excessive stress due to the incident and ensuing public backlash.
To investigate the matter further, a five-member committee, including a retired senior professor, a senior journalist, and three faculty members, will conduct a detailed inquiry. The committee aims to examine the viral video, its context, and implications, with a report expected within seven days. The controversy arose from Pawar’s comments about male cadavers’ genitalia during a stand-up comedy show, leading to widespread criticism and online outrage.
Maharashtra Cyber has filed an FIR related to viral comedy videos involving comedian Pranit More, Himanshu Jangra, Sejal Pawar, and others. The FIR, under specific sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act, addresses the dissemination of objectionable content on online platforms. Maharashtra Cyber has summoned the accused individuals following the FIR registration.
