In a significant move, the Kerala Cabinet, under Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, has decided to cancel the contentious Silver Line semi high-speed rail project. This decision, made shortly after assuming office, involves revoking all land acquisition notifications issued for the project across the state. The Chief Minister emphasized that the land takeover proceedings for the Thiruvananthapuram-Kasaragod Silver Line corridor have been officially denotified and annulled, marking a notable shift from the previous government’s stance.
The Cabinet’s decision brings relief to numerous individuals who protested against the project, as CM Satheesan announced the withdrawal of all criminal cases filed against Silver Line demonstrators. Additionally, the government plans to seek judicial assistance in expediting this process and removing the yellow survey stones placed on properties during the previous government’s survey activities. Describing the Silver Line as a potential environmental hazard, CM Satheesan reiterated the government’s commitment to pursuing development initiatives that prioritize the well-being of citizens and the environment.
Furthermore, the Cabinet has proposed extending all rank lists set to expire on August 31 until November 30, a move that is expected to benefit many job seekers awaiting appointments. The government aims to distribute the UDF election manifesto to all departments for devising an implementation strategy under the ‘Vision 2031’ program. Simultaneously, a 100-day action plan focusing on promptly achievable promises will be unveiled shortly. CM Satheesan also announced plans to review the National Highway construction projects in Kerala and conduct a comprehensive evaluation of all aspects related to the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB).
Addressing criticisms regarding his public engagements and identity, CM Satheesan defended his use of his full name, including ‘Menon,’ stating that he intended to mention his late parents’ names as well. He emphasized the importance of maintaining amicable relationships with various societal groups, including critics, while affirming the government’s unwavering commitment to secular values. Dismissing speculations about delays in portfolio allocation, CM Satheesan clarified that the Cabinet portfolios were finalized on the day the government was sworn in and formally presented to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar upon his return to the capital.
