With Kerala’s Assembly elections approaching, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is adjusting his approach to media engagement. Previously known for limited interaction with the press, Vijayan has increased his media briefings, signaling a shift in style as the political climate heats up.
Upon assuming office in 2016, Vijayan discontinued the traditional cabinet press briefings and opted for a more controlled communication strategy. This move led to extended periods of minimal interaction with the media, drawing criticism for lack of transparency.
The recent change in Vijayan’s approach follows the Left Democratic Front’s lackluster performance in local elections, hinting at a need for a revised strategy ahead of the upcoming Assembly polls. In a recent press conference, Vijayan addressed various topics, showcasing a renewed willingness to engage with the media.
During the media interaction, Vijayan discussed international issues, the status of state public sector undertakings, and upcoming protests against the Centre’s financial policies towards Kerala. Notably, Vijayan’s reduced convoy size reflects a conscious effort to project a more approachable image as the election season approaches.
