Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar is experiencing a calmer political transition in Kerala compared to his recent challenging role as acting Governor of Tamil Nadu. After a tumultuous time in Chennai, Arlekar is now back in Kerala’s Lok Bhavan, where the Congress-led UDF has claimed power with a strong mandate supporting Chief Minister-designate V. D. Satheesan. The shift from Tamil Nadu’s political uncertainty to Kerala’s clear mandate has been stark.
Arlekar faced a constitutional challenge in Tamil Nadu as the acting Governor when Chief Minister Vijay had to prove legislative support multiple times before succeeding. In contrast, Kerala’s political landscape saw no suspense, with the UDF securing a significant victory with 102 seats in the 140-member Assembly. The transition of power has been notably smooth and swift, reflecting a different political atmosphere.
Following the Congress Legislative Party’s formal election of Satheesan as its leader and the endorsement from UDF allies, a delegation led by Satheesan and state Congress President Sunny Joseph met the Governor with support letters from all 102 legislators. This meeting set the stage for Satheesan to be invited to form the new government. The preparations for the upcoming swearing-in ceremony on Monday are in progress, where Satheesan and his cabinet are set to take oath in the presence of top Congress leaders and UDF allies.
Unlike the complex and uncertain situation in Tamil Nadu, the transition in Kerala has been largely procedural, with the Governor swiftly completing the necessary formalities. After a week of political tension and constitutional challenges, Kerala’s transition appears refreshingly straightforward for Lok Bhavan.
