After a week of political turmoil in Tamil Nadu, Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar is set for a smoother process as Chief Minister-designate V.D. Satheesan has formally claimed to lead the next government. Satheesan, chosen unanimously by the Congress Legislature Party and supported by UDF allies, met the Governor to submit letters of support from the alliance that secured 102 seats in the 140-member House. The Governor has now invited Satheesan to form the new government, paving the way for the swearing-in ceremony on Monday.
Efforts are underway to ensure that the entire 21-member ministry, including the Chief Minister, takes oath together on Monday itself. The Congress leadership is working to finalize the Cabinet list before the weekend to ensure a smooth transition of power. The Assembly is scheduled to convene on May 21, where all newly elected legislators will also be sworn in.
The political atmosphere in Kerala, particularly around Lok Bhavan, is notably different from the recent tense situation faced by Arlekar in Tamil Nadu. In contrast to the uncertainty in Tamil Nadu, the process in Kerala has been swift and decisive after Satheesan’s name was confirmed by the Congress high command. At the Congress Legislature Party meeting, Satheesan’s name was proposed by KPCC president Sunny Joseph and seconded by Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, with senior leaders praising the collective leadership that led UDF to victory.
For Lok Bhavan, the transition of power in Kerala appears smooth and uncomplicated, marking a stark contrast to the recent political uncertainties in Chennai.
