Kerala’s Leader of the Opposition (LoP) V.D. Satheesan presented a comprehensive health sector reform blueprint developed by a commission under the United Democratic Front (UDF). This initiative aims to address the critical health challenges faced by the state. The report, led by S.S. Lal, marks the first systematic study commissioned by a political front in Kerala’s history.
The primary focus of the reform plan is to ensure Universal Health Coverage, guaranteeing that every citizen receives necessary treatment without financial barriers. LoP Satheesan highlighted the urgent need to improve the healthcare system, emphasizing the importance of diagnostic tests and medicines being readily available in government hospitals. He also criticized the current state of public hospitals, citing overcrowding, insufficient ICU and ventilator facilities, and operational challenges despite recent infrastructure investments.
The UDF’s proposed reforms include 24-hour trauma care in secondary hospitals, integration of Health and Medical Education departments, enhanced drug quality monitoring, and swift emergency ambulance services. LoP Satheesan outlined plans to reduce out-of-pocket healthcare expenses significantly and introduce specialized healthcare services for women, children, tribal communities, and other vulnerable groups. Additionally, he warned against potential cost escalations due to corporate takeovers of private hospitals and proposed measures to ensure affordable healthcare for all.
