Kerala’s Leader of the Opposition, V.D. Satheesan, made a surprise visit to party MP Shashi Tharoor in Thiruvananthapuram, emphasizing unity ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. The meeting at Tharoor’s residence centered on election preparations and is part of a larger effort by the Congress high command to project a united front. Tharoor has expressed readiness to actively participate in the campaign, including drafting the election manifesto and engaging with youth and professionals to broaden the party’s appeal.
AICC general secretary K.C. Venugopal and veteran leader A.K. Antony played pivotal roles in facilitating the reconciliation between the leaders. Tharoor’s commitment to the party was reaffirmed during a recent meeting with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi. Tharoor emphasized his loyalty to the Congress and the UDF, dispelling any notions of external pressure on his involvement in party activities.
Tharoor’s decision to remain with the UDF has boosted the party’s morale, particularly due to his influence among young voters and those not aligned with any political faction. The visit marks the conclusion of a period of internal discord within the Congress, which had sparked speculation about Tharoor’s potential alignment with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
