Kerala’s new Sports Minister, O.J. Janeesh, has initiated a thorough audit of all sports associations recognized by the Kerala State Sports Council. The audit aims to address long-standing irregularities in the sports sector. Associations are required to provide detailed information on their operations, finances, elections, and governance within seven days.
The State Sports Council will review the responses and submit a consolidated report to the government within another seven days. Associations will be evaluated based on compliance, governance standards, sporting achievements, infrastructure, financial transparency, and the necessity for government intervention. Those with pending issues or disputes will undergo closer scrutiny.
The audit comes in response to complaints regarding financial mismanagement, lack of transparency, and allegations of associations being controlled by a few individuals to the detriment of athletes. It is also expected to investigate sports quota recruitments and admissions to professional courses, addressing concerns of unfair practices in candidate selection.
Minister Janeesh’s actions are seen as a significant effort to reform sports administration in Kerala and enhance its credibility. The appointment of the next Kerala Sports Council President, a decision awaited by many, will be closely watched. The position has historically been contested between political figures and accomplished athletes, with the choice reflecting the government’s approach to sports leadership.
