Close to five million students in Kerala returned to school on Monday following the two-month summer vacation. The reopening of schools is a significant event in Kerala, marking one of the first public appearances for the new government under Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan. The Chief Minister inaugurated the state-level school reopening ceremony at the Government Model Girls Higher Secondary School in Pattom, officially commencing the new academic year.
New State Education Minister N. Shamsudin joined the event before Chief Minister Satheesan, distributing sweets and sitting among the young students. Unlike previous years, this year’s school reopening, known as Praveshanolsavam, was more subdued, focusing on academic readiness and student well-being. Despite the scaled-back celebrations, the day remained emotionally significant for families across Kerala.
Social media platforms were filled with images and videos of children in crisp uniforms, proudly carrying new school supplies. Parents shared photos of their children on the first day of school, while grandparents reminisced with nostalgic messages and pictures of their grandchildren heading to school. The tradition of sharing these moments online has turned the school reopening day into a virtual statewide family album, blending nostalgia with festivity.
This year, over three lakh children are starting school for the first time, adding to the excitement of the reopening. Education authorities confirmed that all necessary preparations, including the distribution of textbooks and learning materials, were completed well ahead of time. The reopening coincides with ongoing discussions about educational reforms, such as the proposal for menstrual leave for female students and efforts to create more inclusive school environments.
Despite the joyous occasion, the looming southwest monsoon brought concerns, with heavy rainfall predicted in various districts. As the India Meteorological Department issued weather alerts, many parents began the academic year with a watchful eye on both the classroom and the approaching rains. For Kerala, the reopening of schools signifies the return of familiar routines that shape the state’s social calendar, with children back in classrooms, families sharing proud moments, and the monsoon season on the horizon.
