Police in Pathanamthitta, Kerala, have apprehended Suhail Ansari, the Kerala Youth Congress State General Secretary, regarding the suicide of a young woman who worked as a receptionist at a local private school. The deceased woman, a resident of Sooranad, was discovered hanging in her home on February 14. Initial suspicions pointed towards her husband due to signs of physical assault on her body.
Marks of physical assault were reportedly found on her body. It is learnt that she had an argument with her husband the previous night, prompting relatives and local residents to initially suspect him. Following the quarrel, the husband allegedly took her mobile phone and left. The police, who conducted an inquest on the day of the incident, did not find any suicide note. However, three notes believed to be written by the woman were discovered by her family three days later during a house search.
In one of the notes, she accused Suhail Ansari of persistently harassing her. The arrest of Ansari was made after a scientific examination of the notes and the collection of corroborative evidence. WhatsApp chats retrieved from the woman’s phone, later presented by her husband during questioning, have reportedly strengthened the case against Ansari. The incident has also highlighted alleged shortcomings in the initial investigation process, emphasizing the importance of documenting all material evidence related to such cases during inquest proceedings.
Police suspect that despite being friends, Ansari’s alleged inappropriate behavior may have driven the woman to take her own life. Ansari, who previously worked as a teacher before assuming the PRO role while remaining active in politics, now faces serious allegations. This development follows the recent arrest of Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil in a rape case, adding political tension as the Assembly elections draw closer.
