Kerala’s Finance Minister, K.N. Balagopal, announced that the state’s financial situation has notably enhanced. Despite awaiting funds from the Centre, Kerala has effectively managed its finances, enabling progress. Balagopal, a Commerce postgraduate and first-time legislator, presented his sixth consecutive budget.
He expressed optimism regarding the state’s economic future as infrastructure developments advance. Balagopal emphasized that the budget, although not election-focused, includes significant welfare initiatives. Responding to the Leader of Opposition’s comments, he stressed the importance of government support for citizens’ income security.
The Minister highlighted the state’s responsibility to adjust allowances for workers like ASHA and anganwadi employees, underscoring the lack of increased central contributions over the past 12 years. Balagopal emphasized the necessity of timely state interventions, which have been integrated into the budget.
Key announcements in the budget include insurance coverage for various worker categories, free initial treatment for road accident victims, and enhanced benefits under the Medisep scheme for government employees. Significant allocations have been made for infrastructure projects, such as the development of MC Road and the Vizhinjam port project.
The budget also includes provisions for the RRT line, preliminary steps for the Kasaragod high-speed rail project, and feasibility studies for tunnel road projects. Additionally, the handover of houses to Wayanad disaster-affected families is scheduled for February.
