King George’s Medical University (KGMU) has decided to stop the cooking and serving of non-vegetarian food in its hostels and canteens immediately. The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Soniya Nityanand, supported this move, emphasizing the health benefits of vegetarian alternatives. She highlighted that vegetarian food is considered healthier, especially in maintaining hygiene during hot weather conditions.
Prof. Nityanand explained that the global trend towards vegetarianism is due to its health advantages, reducing the risk of gastrointestinal cancers like colon cancer. She also mentioned the better keeping quality of vegetarian food in summers as an added advantage. While the university will no longer provide non-vegetarian meals, students are allowed to bring or cook such food according to their preferences.
The decision to ban non-vegetarian food in KGMU’s facilities came after Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel’s inspection raised concerns about hygiene standards. The Governor, who is also the Chancellor of state universities, expressed worries about the preparation of non-vegetarian food on campus. This move has been welcomed by various spiritual leaders, who see it as a positive step towards promoting healthier dietary choices.
