The Khalistan movement, once a focus for the ISI, is now facing challenges as it transforms into an extortion scheme, rather than a legitimate cause. The Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) leadership blames Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, head of the banned Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), for steering the movement towards terrorizing people for financial gain.
The SFJ, initially responsible for communication, has shifted towards extortion under Pannun’s leadership, resulting in a loss of support and credibility. Intelligence reports suggest that the ISI has instructed various Khalistan-related groups to unite under the BKI, aiming for a consolidated approach rather than fragmented operations.
Efforts to revive the Khalistan movement are hindered by internal discord, financial mismanagement, and a lack of ideological commitment among key figures like Pannun. The movement’s credibility has eroded, leading to recruitment challenges and a diminishing appeal among the youth in Punjab.
The disunity among Khalistan outfits, exacerbated by financial irregularities and a focus on extortion, has weakened their ability to garner support and carry out significant operations. Collaborative efforts between India, the UK, and Canada have intensified, disrupting the activities of Khalistani elements and limiting their capacity to organize large-scale events.
Pannun’s authoritarian tactics and financial misconduct have alienated him from other Khalistan groups, diminishing his influence and credibility. The ongoing scrutiny by security agencies poses a significant threat to his leadership and the overall effectiveness of the Khalistan movement.
