North Korean leader Kim Jong-un recently met with commanding officers of the armed forces and urged the reinforcement of front-line units along the southern border. Emphasizing the importance of advancing military technology in key units, particularly those at the front line, Kim highlighted their role in deterring war effectively. This meeting marked the first of its kind since Kim assumed power in late 2011.
Kim stressed the need for heightened awareness against North Korea’s perceived enemies and outlined plans to transform the southern border into an “impregnable fortress.” He also announced intentions to revamp the military’s organizational structure and bolster first-line and major units to enhance the country’s war deterrence capabilities. Additionally, Kim revealed a policy to modernize the training system with a focus on practical drills suited for contemporary warfare.
The gathering, attended by approximately 180-250 commanding officers, was the largest of its kind and followed Pyongyang’s efforts to strengthen its front-line defenses. Kim recently instructed the military to deploy a new self-propelled howitzer along the southern border by the end of the year. During the meeting, Kim engaged in a photo session with senior military commanders, including Ri Yong-gil and Pak Jong-chon.
South Korea’s unification ministry noted that the meeting underscores the importance of military modernization and ideological discipline. The ministry spokesperson highlighted that the gathering aimed to motivate and encourage the armed forces. The government expressed its commitment to closely monitoring related developments in the region.
North Korea has taken steps to fortify its presence near the inter-Korean border by deploying troops, planting mines, setting up anti-tank barriers, and reinforcing barbed wire fences. This move followed Kim’s declaration of inter-Korean relations as those between “two states hostile to each other” in late 2023.
