The Kimberley Process (KP) Intersessional Meeting 2026 has started in Mumbai, with India leading the discussions on global natural diamond trade. Representatives from various countries and industry stakeholders have gathered for the meeting, ongoing from May 11-14. Suchindra Misra, KP Chair 2026, highlighted the Kimberley Process’s role in promoting peace, safeguarding livelihoods, and enhancing legitimate diamond trade worldwide.
The focus of the meeting is to reinforce trust in the system, boost cooperation among participants, and ensure the Kimberley Process’s relevance in a changing global landscape. Misra emphasized that natural diamonds are sustainable products and praised the Kimberley Process as one of the most progressive certification systems globally. India, a key player in diamond cutting and polishing, took over the Chairship of the Kimberley Process on January 1, 2026, underscoring its dedication to responsible sourcing, transparency, and sustainability in the diamond industry.
The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) aims to prevent conflict diamonds from entering the legal diamond trade, with 60 Participants representing 86 countries, including the European Union and its Member States. The ongoing ‘Intersessional Meeting’ will involve discussions on KPCS implementation, monitoring and compliance mechanisms, artisanal and alluvial diamond production, statistics, and measures to enhance trust in the natural diamond value chain.
The meeting also serves as a platform for participants and observers to address emerging challenges and collaborate on approaches to boost consumer confidence in ethically sourced natural diamonds. India’s Chairship theme for 2026 revolves around the 3Cs — credibility, compliance, and consumer confidence — in the natural diamond sector, aiming to strengthen the future of responsibly sourced natural diamonds through constructive dialogue and international cooperation.
