Reacting to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech on the Women’s Reservation Bill, former IPS officer Kiran Bedi expressed hope for women claiming their rightful place in legislative bodies sooner than 2029. Bedi praised the PM’s message, emphasizing the growing momentum towards gender equality in politics.
PM Modi, following the bill’s failure in the Lok Sabha, apologized to Indian women for the setback in implementing women’s reservation in Parliament and state assemblies. He acknowledged the necessity of empowering women in decision-making roles and vowed to continue efforts in this direction.
The Constitutional Amendment Bill, aiming to provide 33% reservation for women in Parliament, fell short of the required two-thirds majority. PM Modi criticized the Opposition, accusing them of obstructing women’s empowerment through misinformation and diversionary tactics. He affirmed his commitment to ensuring women’s increased representation in legislative bodies despite the bill’s defeat.
Kiran Bedi, in her social media posts, highlighted the importance of women voters supporting candidates committed to gender equality in future elections. She emphasized the need for genuine representation and active participation of women in shaping the nation’s future, stating that symbolic gestures are insufficient.
