Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju criticized the Congress party for its democratic integrity and respect for the nation’s constitutional traditions. Rijiju highlighted a statement by Congress leader Pawan Khera, suggesting that BJP leaders would be confined to their homes if Congress came to power. Rijiju emphasized the importance of not allowing a dictatorial party like Congress to govern again.
The controversy arose from Pawan Khera’s remarks during a media interaction on the anniversary of the 1975 Emergency. Khera implied that BJP leaders would require security to move freely if Congress took power, citing threats to democracy under the current government. The Emergency, declared by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, suspended civil liberties and censored the press for nearly two years.
Rijiju condemned the alleged intimidation tactics, stating that democracy is at risk under the current administration. He criticized the suppression of media and democratic institutions, warning that such actions would have consequences. The BJP marked the Emergency anniversary as “Constitution Murder Day,” denouncing it as a dark period for democracy.
