The Building Department of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has revealed the discovery of around 3,000 unauthorized constructions across Kolkata. These illegal structures, including additions and extensions, are at risk of immediate demolition, particularly in areas like the EM Bypass in eastern Kolkata.
Most of these illicit constructions are concentrated in various boroughs of the KMC, such as Beliaghata, Tangra, Tiljala, Burrabazar, Topsia, Kasba, Garden Reach, Metiabruz, Cossipore, and Chitpur. Some of these regions have been marked as ‘red zones’ due to the prevalence of illegal buildings.
Investigations by KMC officials have unveiled that local promoters and syndicates have played a significant role in facilitating these unauthorized constructions.
