The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has temporarily closed its birth and death registration portal to verify certificates issued during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) period. Officials revealed that a surge in applications for backdated certificates during the SIR period prompted concerns about the authenticity of these documents. The decision to reverify certificates has led to the partial shutdown of the portal.
According to insiders, the new state government suspects that the birth and death certificates issued during the SIR period may not be genuine. As a result, certain functionalities on the portal have been disabled temporarily. While current data can still be uploaded, access to old certificates and duplicate copies is restricted for now. The closure is expected to be temporary, with all services set to resume soon.
Acknowledging potential challenges for the public due to the portal’s partial closure, a KMC insider emphasized the importance of verifying certificates from the SIR period. This verification process aims to confirm the authenticity of the certificates issued during that time. However, the decision has caused confusion among users seeking access to old data, leading to tensions between the public and KMC staff.
