The Kolkata Police have apprehended a young man for deceiving a woman he met on a matrimonial website by promising marriage, as per a police official. Investigations revealed that the man had defrauded multiple women of money and jewelry, allegedly marrying 15 women through similar fraudulent schemes. The accused, identified as Matiur Rahman from Bowbazar in central Kolkata, posed as Manik Roy on matrimonial platforms, engaging with a woman from Naihati in North 24 Parganas district under this alias.
Manik, claiming an annual income of Rs 1.5 crore, convinced the woman of his intentions for marriage, leading her to share her aspirations with her family. However, as time passed, she felt pressured as he persistently demanded money and valuables. Despite initially complying and giving him Rs 85,000 in cash along with a gold bracelet, suspicions arose when he fabricated a story about his uncle’s death in Mumbai, despite his actual residence being in East Burdwan district.
The woman’s doubts intensified when she discovered his true location through social media and connected with other victims, realizing that Matiur had exploited multiple women in a similar manner, even marrying 15 of them. Subsequently, she reported the matter to the police, resulting in the arrest of the accused following a formal complaint lodged by her.
