The Kolkata Police have issued a directive banning the display of any weapons during the Muharram procession. They have also prohibited the use of DJs and excessively tall tazias during the event. The police emphasized that no new processions will be allowed and have communicated these instructions to all police stations under their jurisdiction.
To maintain communal harmony and uphold law and order, the police have taken these measures ahead of the upcoming Muharram celebrations in Kolkata. Deputy Commissioner-rank officers from relevant police stations have convened meetings to ensure compliance with these guidelines. Lalbazar, the Kolkata Police headquarters, has specified that only traditional processions with no weapons display will be permitted.
In addition, the police have mandated that the height of tazias in processions should not pose a risk to infrastructure like cables and electricity wires. They have also enforced a ban on playing DJs and have set noise level regulations for any microphones or loudspeakers used during the event. Organizers are required to prevent noise pollution and refrain from conveying sensitive messages during the procession.
Furthermore, police officers have been directed to monitor these regulations closely and hold meetings with procession organizers. Additional police personnel will be deployed along the procession routes to ensure public safety and harmony during the Muharram celebrations in Kolkata.
