The Kolkata Police discovered a significant amount of cash hidden in a vehicle’s boot in New Town, Kolkata. This discovery was made during heightened security measures implemented for the ongoing Assembly elections. The police stopped a vehicle at a check-post near City Centre-II, where they found bundles of Rs 500 notes in a bag in the vehicle’s boot.
The driver, identified as Suresh Thakur, was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for the cash. Consequently, the police confiscated the Rs 25 lakh cash and arrested the driver for further questioning. Authorities are now investigating the source of the money and the intended recipient.
This incident marks the third major cash seizure in West Bengal this week. Earlier, on March 19, the police recovered Rs 11.75 lakh in separate instances of checking at Baruipur and Alipurduar Chowpatty Crossing. The Election Commission of India has deployed a significant number of observers in West Bengal to prevent the misuse of illegal cash during the upcoming elections.
