Two Korean American lawmakers, Sen. Andy Kim and Rep. Young Kim, highlighted their dedication to enhancing economic and other ties with South Korea. They participated in an event by the Korean American Grassroots Conference in Washington to honor prominent community members. Sen. Andy Kim, the first Korean American Senate member, acknowledged challenges in the US-South Korea relationship but remains optimistic about its future.
He mentioned obstacles like tariff tensions but expressed confidence in the robust bond between the two countries. Sen. Kim emphasized South Korea’s increasing investment in the US shipbuilding industry, particularly citing Hanwha’s acquisition of the Philly Shipyard in Philadelphia. He sees significant potential for further growth in the relationship and is committed to fostering it as a Korean American senator.
Congresswoman Young Kim, who leads the subcommittee on East Asia and Pacific affairs, shared her positive expectations for the newly appointed US Ambassador to South Korea, Michelle Steel. She praised Steel as the right fit for the critical US-South Korea relations. Sen. Andy Kim, however, criticized Steel for alleged racist remarks against Asian Americans in politics and the military, urging her to apologize.
Rep. Young Kim anticipated Steel playing a substantial role in various matters, including addressing families separated by the Korean War. She highlighted the importance of South Korean direct investment in the US and advocated for the “Partner with Korea Act,” aiming to allocate 15,000 work visas for skilled South Koreans. The congresswoman stressed the significance of the bill following an immigration incident involving Korean workers in Georgia.
Sen. Cory Booker also joined the event, commending the Korean American community for its contributions and advocating for increased Korean representation in American politics. He emphasized the need for diversity in leadership roles for a thriving democracy. Rep. Young Kim reflected on her journey to Congress, emphasizing America’s opportunities for diverse individuals to contribute to national strength.
