Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has issued a ban on the sale and use of single-use plastics in J&K. This initiative aims to crack down on littering and violations related to plastic, emphasizing the need to protect Ladakh’s fragile ecology and scenic beauty. Stringent penalties will be enforced for those found littering or violating the ban on single-use plastic items.
Field-level officials, including Block Development Officers, Tehsildars, and Municipal Officers, have been authorized to identify violations and issue fines, marking a significant shift in enforcement strategy. Random inspections will be conducted at Leh Airport and various entry points to prevent the entry and circulation of banned plastic items in Ladakh. The move comes in response to mounting concerns about the harmful effects of plastic waste on Ladakh’s environment, particularly given the region’s heavy tourist footfall.
The Lieutenant Governor emphasized that Ladakh’s natural environment is a key asset and called for a balance between development goals, tourism growth, and environmental protection. Strict enforcement measures will be implemented to ensure compliance with the ban and preserve the region’s distinct ecological identity. The Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance, representing J&K, have long advocated for the preservation of Ladakh’s unique ecology, environment, and cultural heritage, including seeking inclusion in the 6th Schedule of the Constitution and statehood.
