Leaders from the ruling MahaYuti in Maharashtra expressed backing for the state government’s move to establish a committee led by a retired High Court judge to examine the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) implementation. Maharashtra Minister Nitesh Rane emphasized that the UCC is a constitutional provision linked to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s principles.
In contrast, the Opposition stressed the need for inclusivity in implementing the UCC, advocating for laws that accommodate diverse perspectives. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde highlighted Shiv Sena’s consistent advocacy for a Uniform Civil Code, echoing the stance of the late Bal Thackeray.
While BJP MLA Sudhir Mungantiwar underscored the importance of safeguarding women’s rights regardless of religious considerations, NCP MLA Sana Malik called for a comprehensive and inclusive approach to introducing the UCC. Congress leader Arif Naseem Khan raised concerns about the timing of the committee formation, suggesting a potential diversion from critical issues affecting the state.
Khan reiterated the Congress party’s commitment to upholding constitutional rights, particularly Article 25, which guarantees freedom of religious practice. He emphasized the party’s readiness to engage in discussions that align with constitutional principles and benefit the people of Maharashtra.
