Lebanese President Joseph Aoun assured the US President, Donald Trump, of Lebanon’s commitment to implementing the US-brokered framework agreement with Israel during a recent phone call. Aoun expressed optimism that the United States would help enforce the agreement and ensure Israel’s compliance, especially in withdrawing from occupied areas in southern Lebanon to facilitate the Lebanese army’s deployment to the recognized border.
Trump reiterated Washington’s support for Lebanon and its people, promising to assist in executing the deal and restoring stability in the nation. He emphasized US backing for Lebanon’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, as well as the extension of state authority through its armed forces across the entire country. The call concluded with Trump expressing anticipation of a future meeting with Aoun in Washington.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Friday that Israel and Lebanon had reached a framework agreement for long-term peace and security. The agreement, finalized in Washington, D.C., following ambassador-level discussions, focuses on upholding a fragile ceasefire between the two countries. Rubio highlighted the significance of the agreement in establishing a foundation for enduring peace and security between Lebanon and Israel.
The framework agreement’s objectives include the restoration of Lebanon’s sovereignty, the dismantling of Hizballah’s military infrastructure, and the eventual return of Israeli forces to their borders once security threats are eliminated.
