The Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) has issued a notice to Suruchi Sangha, a popular club in south Kolkata, to vacate the land it has taken over by July 18. The club has been accused of illegally occupying LIC plot numbers 498, 499, 500, and 501 in the New Alipore area. LIC has warned of legal action if the land is not returned within the specified timeframe.
Former state minister Aroop Biswas and his brother, Swarup Biswas, are allegedly involved in constructing the Suruchi Sangha Club on the disputed land. Despite previous accusations of land grabbing, the Biswas brothers have not complied with requests to vacate the area. LIC has now escalated its efforts to reclaim its property following a change in the state government.
Officials from LIC recently filed a formal complaint at the Alipore police station to initiate the process of reclaiming the land. The insurance company has reiterated its demand for Suruchi Sangha to vacate the premises by July 18. The club, managed by Aroop Biswas and Swarup Biswas, hosts the annual Durga Puja festivities, but recent events have led to unrest, including Swarup’s arrest on various charges.
LIC has alleged that the Biswas brothers have unlawfully occupied the land for an extended period, where the Suruchi Sangha’s Durga Puja celebrations take place. The club has also faced accusations of unauthorized construction that encroaches upon LIC’s property. Despite previous attempts, including legal action and court involvement, LIC has been unsuccessful in recovering the land.
Suruchi Sangha has faced allegations of corruption, with claims of storing government goods through dubious means at the club. The ongoing dispute highlights the longstanding conflict between LIC and the club over the contested land in Kolkata.
