Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Paatil for their involvement in resolving the long-standing Narmada water dispute. The dispute involving Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan saw progress after the Attorney General of India’s opinion in February 2026 on sharing resettlement costs.
During a meeting in New Delhi, it was decided that Gujarat would bear 75% of the costs, reducing Madhya Pradesh’s share to Rs 217 crore from around Rs 1,500 crore. The Narmada Water Disputes Tribunal (NWDT) was formed to address the sharing of benefits and costs of the river, with the recent resolution facilitated by the Union Ministry.
The agreement includes waiving or restructuring historical liabilities to enable a comprehensive settlement. Madhya Pradesh will pay Rs 217 crore to Gujarat to settle all pending obligations, allowing Gujarat to move forward without further litigation. Rajasthan has also settled its cost-sharing responsibilities under this agreement, benefiting from Narmada waters for irrigation and agricultural development.
