Madhya Pradesh is currently in the grip of a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring above 45 degrees Celsius in various regions. The Meteorological Centre in Bhopal has issued alerts across 25 districts due to the extreme heat. Western parts of the state have recorded temperatures ranging between 42 and 44 degrees, while the eastern parts have seen temperatures of 43-45 degrees. Notably, Khajuraho and Naugaon registered the highest temperature of 45.8 degrees recently.
Heatwave conditions have been officially declared in Khajuraho, Datia, and Naugaon. The India Meteorological Department has predicted that most areas of the state will witness temperatures between 42 and 45 degrees, well above normal levels. The heatwave is expected to persist in the coming days. Additionally, thunderstorms and rain have been reported in several districts including Badwani, Burhanpur, Dewas, and Dhar.
Dust storms have been observed in Dewas, South Khargone, and South Sehore districts over the past 24 hours. The Meteorological Centre has issued heatwave warnings for 25 districts, including Satna, Panna, Chhatarpur, Tikamgarh, and others. Heat index maps for May 25 and 26 indicate that a significant portion of the state, especially the eastern and northern districts, will experience high discomfort levels with heat index values surpassing dangerous thresholds.
Red zones denoting severe heatwave warnings are visible in various northern and eastern districts on the warning maps. Citizens are advised to take necessary precautions such as avoiding outdoor activities between noon and 4 p.m., staying hydrated, and wearing light-colored loose clothing. Special attention should be given to vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic illnesses.
Farmers and outdoor workers are recommended to adjust their work schedules to avoid the peak heat hours. The intense heatwave poses a significant challenge as the summer season progresses, coinciding with upcoming festivals like Ganga Dussehra and Bakrid. Authorities are expected to issue further safety guidelines for public gatherings at religious sites and ghats. The Meteorological Department has warned that the heatwave conditions are likely to continue for the next few days, emphasizing the importance of adhering to heat safety measures.
