The Madhya Pradesh government has clarified that there are no current plans to change the name of Barkatullah University in Bhopal. Minister of Higher Education Inder Singh Parmar made this statement in response to a query raised by Congress MLA Atif Arif Aqueel in the state Assembly. The query inquired about any potential renaming of the university, which has been in existence since 1988.

In his written reply, Minister Parmar categorically stated that there is no decision to rename the university at this time. He also addressed questions regarding the consideration of Dr. Barkatullah Bhopali, a notable freedom fighter, as well as the legal procedures required for any name change. The minister emphasized that no such decision has been made, and further information is being gathered on the matter.

Barkatullah University, named after the distinguished freedom fighter and scholar Maulana Barkatullah Bhopali, holds a significant position as a higher education institution in Madhya Pradesh. The university, known for its academic excellence over the years, serves students from the state and surrounding areas. The government’s clear stance on the issue is expected to dispel any speculations about an imminent renaming process.

The recent clarification by the Madhya Pradesh government comes amidst the ongoing Monsoon Session of the state Legislative Assembly, where various educational topics are being discussed. Earlier this year, the university’s executive council proposed changing the institution’s name to ‘Vagdevi Bhopal University,’ sparking reactions from Opposition parties. However, the government’s response affirms that there is no current proposal to alter the historical nomenclature of the university.
