The Madhya Pradesh government has partnered with a Hyderabad-based private firm to improve cervical cancer screening and management in the state. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed to implement a pilot project in Rewa district, targeting 10,000 women aged 25 to 65 for Human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA-based screening. Early detection is crucial as cervical cancer is a major cause of cancer-related deaths among Indian women, often due to delayed diagnosis in rural areas.
The National Health Mission (NHM) Madhya Pradesh will oversee the project’s execution, training frontline workers such as Auxiliary Nurse Midwives, Staff Nurses, Community Health Officers, and ASHA workers. These workers will be responsible for community mobilization, sample collection, counseling, and follow-up at the village and sub-center levels. The Hyderabad-based private firm will offer technical support throughout the screening and treatment process, developing training materials and clinical guidelines for the state.
In addition to technical assistance, the private firm will conduct “Train-the-Trainer” programs to establish a group of “Master Trainers” in Madhya Pradesh. These trainers will further educate district and block-level staff, ensuring a sustainable capacity-building approach. The collaboration also includes provisions for monitoring, research, quality assurance, data management, and referral services for women testing positive, streamlining treatment pathways for timely care and case tracking.
The pilot project in Rewa aims to serve as a model for expanding HPV DNA-based screening to other districts in Madhya Pradesh. Data collected from this initiative will aid in refining state strategies for cervical cancer elimination in alignment with World Health Organization objectives. The partnership is expected to address critical skill, technology, and outreach gaps, enhancing screening accessibility in remote villages and integrating cancer screening into primary healthcare services to reach women who miss routine check-ups.
