Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis responded to the controversy surrounding Tipu Sultan, criticizing the distortion of historical facts for political gain. He emphasized that while India respects patriotic citizens, invaders cannot be accepted as national icons in Maharashtra. Fadnavis clarified that the issue is not about Tipu Sultan’s rule but the attempt to equate him with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
In a debate on the Governor’s address, Fadnavis highlighted the importance of teaching accurate history. He pointed out the disparity in educational narratives, noting the increased focus on Maratha history in current textbooks. The Chief Minister stressed that the government opposes the glorification of invaders and enemies of the nation, emphasizing the difference between Shivaji Maharaj’s fight for self-rule and Tipu Sultan’s controversial legacy.
Fadnavis expressed concern over the hurt sentiments caused by the comparison between Tipu Sultan and Shivaji Maharaj, leading to recent clashes in Pune and Mumbai. As Home Minister, he warned against any glorification that could incite communal tensions, stating that the government will not tolerate such actions.
