The Maharashtra government has given the green light for the establishment of Maharashtra Agency for Holistic International Mobility and Advancements (MAHIMA), a government-owned, not-for-profit entity. MAHIMA aims to create an ecosystem to assist the state’s skilled workforce in securing overseas employment opportunities. The agency will collaborate with NSDC-International, global employers, skill universities, training institutions, industry associations, and recruiting agencies.
MAHIMA’s services will include providing support to candidates through skill and language training, counseling, documentation facilitation, pre-departure orientation, and financial aid mechanisms like scholarships and credit guarantees. The agency’s scope of work will focus on areas such as international cooperation, advertising, candidate databases, guidance, skill training, language assistance, cultural orientation, documentation support, pre-departure training, and technology and infrastructure.
Formed under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013, MAHIMA will operate under the Skills, Employment, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation Department. The growing trend of Indian youth seeking international employment due to higher wages abroad has prompted the establishment of such agencies. States like Kerala, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh have similar organizations to facilitate overseas employment opportunities for skilled workers.
Experts emphasize the importance of a well-coordinated ecosystem for skilled workers to enhance employment prospects and long-term career growth. Quality training, language skills, certification, counseling, and reliable placement support are crucial for workers to compete effectively in both domestic and international job markets. A structured system connecting skill institutions, industry, recruiters, and government agencies can help prevent exploitation, ensure better wages and working conditions, and boost job seeker confidence.
Such an ecosystem not only aids professionals in adapting to global demands but also enhances the credibility of the workforce, making them more appealing to employers worldwide.
