Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma participated in a yoga session with senior officers of the Indian Coast Guard at Lok Bhavan in Mumbai to mark the International Day of Yoga. The event, held in collaboration with the Indian Coast Guard, coincided with the force’s Golden Jubilee year. Attendees included Coast Guard officers, their families, and Lok Bhavan officials.
In his address, the Governor urged universities in Maharashtra to promote yoga extensively and train instructors for global outreach. He highlighted the global acceptance of yoga and credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for proposing the International Day of Yoga at the United Nations. This proposal garnered significant international backing, culminating in a UN resolution.
Governor Varma commended the Indian Coast Guard for its significant contributions to the nation since its inception in 1977. As the force nears 50 years of service, he lauded its dedication, professionalism, and selfless efforts. The Coast Guard has played a crucial role in safeguarding India’s maritime interests, particularly in Maharashtra with its extensive coastline and busy ports.
The Governor emphasized the Coast Guard’s role in maritime security, safeguarding lives at sea, supporting fishermen, combating illegal activities, and ensuring coastal security. He praised the force’s unwavering commitment to maintaining safe and prosperous seas. The celebration of the International Day of Yoga mirrored the Coast Guard’s values of physical fitness, mental resilience, and service ethos.
Highlighting his position as Chancellor of 29 state universities with over three million students, Governor Varma urged universities to actively promote yoga. He expressed confidence in universities producing top-notch yoga instructors to contribute to the global dissemination of this ancient Indian practice. The event also included felicitations by senior Coast Guard officials and a yoga session led by instructor Dilip Dauneria from Kaivalyadhama.
