Both houses of the Maharashtra Legislature concluded their month-long budget session and adjourned sine die on Wednesday. The Legislative Council Chairman and Assembly Speaker announced that the monsoon session will commence on June 22 in Mumbai.
During the budget session, a total of 27 key bills were passed, out of 29 bills tabled. One bill was withdrawn, and another remains pending in the Legislative Council. The session highlighted the government’s focus on education, revenue, and home affairs.
Several significant bills received approval, including the Maharashtra Freedom of Religion Bill, 2026, aimed at regulating religious conversions. The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (Maharashtra Amendment) Bill, 2026, was passed to provide protections for acid attack victims and address online sexual harassment.
The legislative agenda also featured bills concerning public and private universities, higher education sector reforms, fiscal goals through bills like the Maharashtra Appropriation Bill and Maharashtra Tax Settlement Bill, and decentralization of administrative powers through amendments to the Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti acts.
Additionally, bills related to modernizing standards for lifts, escalators, and partnership acts were updated. The Wildlife (Protection) (Maharashtra Amendment) Bill was passed to enhance conservation efforts within the state.
