The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) plans to transition its entire bus fleet to electric vehicles by 2035, aiming to establish an eco-friendly and sustainable public transport system. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik revealed this goal during a session in the Legislative Council. The initiative includes procuring 5,150 electric buses, with over 900 already in operation.
Under the agreement, 172 charging stations are set to be installed across the state, with 39 already completed and 45 more expected to be operational within the next three months. The state is working closely with the company to expedite the setup of the remaining charging stations. Additionally, a crackdown on unauthorized private buses near MSRTC stations has led to punitive actions against over 200 buses.
To promote environmentally friendly public transport, the government has set a target to convert the entire MSRTC fleet to electric vehicles by 2035. This plan encompasses existing buses, new purchases, and the gradual replacement of old buses with electric ones. Once achieved, Maharashtra will be the first state in India to have a fully electric State Transport fleet.
A dedicated three-year roadmap has been devised to enhance MSRTC services in rural, remote, and tribal areas. Approximately Rs 200 crore has been allocated for the modernization of bus depots, construction of residential quarters for staff, and other essential infrastructure developments. The introduction of the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) by MSRTC has been well-received by commuters.
