As the June 1 deadline for nominations nears, Maharashtra’s ruling Mahayuti alliance is immersed in negotiations for seat allocation ahead of the Legislative Council elections on June 18. The alliance, comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP, is strategizing to secure 17 crucial seats elected by local body representatives. Following their strong performance in local body polls, the alliance is poised to dominate the Upper House elections, but disagreements over seat distribution have surfaced.
The BJP, led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, is advocating for a formula that aligns with its numerical strength in local bodies, eyeing around 11 to 12 seats. In contrast, Shiv Sena and NCP are pushing for a larger share, with Shiv Sena aiming for 3 to 4 seats and NCP targeting 2 to 3 seats. However, this proposal has met resistance from alliance members who feel their regional interests are being sidelined.
Tensions have escalated as Shiv Sena and NCP assert their claims in regions like Thane, Pune, and Raigad, challenging the BJP’s proposed allocation. The negotiations have extended beyond seat numbers to intricate political discussions, with talks of strategic arrangements and concessions to maintain alliance unity. Chief Minister Fadnavis emphasized the importance of coalition stability over individual ambitions, assuring that the alliance is united in its goal to win all 17 seats.
Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar have been actively involved in the negotiations, advocating for their parties’ interests in key regions. Shinde emphasized the legacy and political groundwork in Thane, while Pawar highlighted the NCP’s strong voter base in western Maharashtra and Marathwada. The alliance leaders are set to convene for a crucial meeting to finalize the seat-sharing arrangement and candidate selection before the impending deadline.
