Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticized the police for allegedly defying the Calcutta High Court’s directive. She threatened legal action against the officials for potential contempt of court following chaos at her party’s protest march in Kolkata regarding a minor’s rape and murder in Baruipur. Despite the High Court’s approval, she claimed the police obstructed the procession.
The Trinamool Congress leader highlighted that the police were informed in advance about the procession’s route. She asserted that the peaceful event, conducted to exercise democratic rights under the Constitution, was intentionally disrupted. Banerjee criticized the state government for prioritizing politics over the welfare of the people.
Banerjee emphasized that democratic voices should not be silenced through coercion or force. She alleged that the government was using a section of the police to suppress political opponents and leak confidential information about opposition activities to BJP members. Banerjee demanded the restoration of law and order in the state and warned of contempt proceedings against police officers who failed to adhere to the court’s orders.
