Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has advised her party members to be cautious in responding to the government’s first state Budget presented by Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta. Banerjee, during a closed-door meeting with Trinamool Congress leaders, urged them not to rush into criticizing the Budget proposals but to carefully analyze them before taking a public stance.
She emphasized the need to avoid hasty opposition to the Budget, considering the new government’s recent assumption of office. Banerjee highlighted the importance of assessing what benefits the state could receive from the Union Government before forming a definitive opinion. Additionally, she recommended that economists or industry experts associated with the party should thoroughly review the Budget before making detailed evaluations.
Political analysts suggest that Banerjee’s approach signifies a strategic shift following the TMC’s significant defeat in the state’s recent Assembly elections. They argue that blind opposition to the government’s initiatives could harm the party’s efforts to regain support. Instead, focusing on internal party discord and adopting a more cautious and calculated strategy for a political resurgence seems to be Banerjee’s immediate priority.
