Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee appeared at the Calcutta High Court as a counsel to argue in a public interest litigation related to post-poll violence following the recent Assembly elections. The PIL was filed by Sirsanya Banerjee, a counsel at the Calcutta High Court and son of senior advocate Kalyan Banerjee. Mamata Banerjee, clad in the traditional black advocate’s jacket and white collar-band, will present arguments in the case.
Mamata Banerjee, who recently lost the election to current Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, arrived at the High Court to advocate on the matter. Despite her defeat, she did not resign, stating that the election results did not reflect the true public mandate. The earlier state Assembly was dissolved by Governor R.N. Ravi, making Mamata Banerjee a former Chief Minister.
Mamata Banerjee had previously appeared in the Supreme Court in a case related to Special Intensive Revision in West Bengal but did not act as counsel. This time, she is set to argue at the Calcutta High Court. The recent Assembly polls saw Mamata Banerjee’s party, Trinamool Congress, lose, and her personal defeat in Bhabanipur constituency in South Kolkata.
