A man named Rahul Roy has been apprehended in Kolkata for allegedly extorting Rs 3 crore from a woman in Haryana through threats of “digital arrest.” The cyber fraud gang, including Roy, targeted the elderly wife of a former Army officer in Panchkula, Haryana, a few months back. Impersonating Central Bureau of Investigation officials, the fraudsters coerced the woman by claiming she was under “digital arrest” due to drugs supposedly found in a parcel sent in her name.
Members of the gang prevented the woman from leaving her residence, presenting fake evidence through video calls and fabricated documents on WhatsApp. Succumbing to the pressure, she transferred the demanded amount to the fraudsters’ account. Subsequently, she reported the incident to the police in Panchkula, leading to the identification of Roy in Kolkata. Following a joint operation by Kolkata and Haryana Police, Roy was arrested and is being transported to Haryana for further legal proceedings.
In a separate incident, cyber fraudsters targeted an elderly woman in Nayabad, Kolkata, extorting Rs 12.55 lakh from her in two installments under the guise of “digital arrest.” The fraudsters, posing as police officers, coerced the woman by alleging involvement of her daughter and son-in-law in criminal activities. Fearing arrest, the woman complied with their demands, transferring the money as instructed. Upon realizing the scam, she lodged a complaint with the local police, who are currently investigating the matter.
