At least five individuals have been arrested, and two minors detained by the police for the fatal beating of a man in the Kultali area of South 24 Parganas district. The victim, hailing from Kerala, was allegedly tied up and beaten on suspicions of theft, leading to his demise. The incident occurred on June 9, but authorities learned of it through social media on Saturday.
Following the incident, an FIR was lodged, resulting in the initial detention of eight individuals. Subsequently, five were arrested, two minors detained, and one released. All are scheduled to appear in court later in the day. The victim, who was in Kultali for work, inadvertently entered a different neighborhood due to unfamiliarity with the area’s roads, triggering suspicion among locals who confronted him for identification.
The situation escalated, with some assuming him to be a thief, resulting in him being tied up and assaulted. Upon police intervention upon receiving reports of an injured individual, the victim was pronounced dead at Jaynagar-Kultali Rural Hospital. Authorities are currently investigating the incident comprehensively, with the victim’s identity yet to be disclosed. The cause of death remains under investigation, with the police acting on a video circulating on social media that led to the arrests.
