In Mumbai, a tragic incident occurred when a 63-year-old man lost his life after a tree collapsed on him during heavy rains and strong winds. The man, who had recently purchased a shop in the area, was preparing for its opening day when the tree fell on him with great force, as captured by a CCTV camera.
Following the incident in Kurla, Mayor Ritu Tawde urged residents to remain indoors and be cautious due to the severe weather conditions. The India Meteorological Department had issued a Red alert for Mumbai, Thane, and nearby districts in anticipation of relentless monsoon downpours.
In a separate incident in Aarey Colony, an 18-year-old died after a tree branch fell on him while he was riding a motorcycle. Tragically, the victim lost consciousness and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. These incidents come in the wake of a recent tragedy involving a school bus where a tree collapse led to the death of an 11-year-old student and injuries to four other children.
With waterlogging reported in various parts of the city, Mayor Tawde advised citizens to avoid unnecessary outings and to steer clear of trees for safety. She emphasized the importance of following official instructions during the adverse weather conditions and provided a helpline number, 1916, for emergency assistance.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation also cautioned the public about the risks of standing under trees during strong winds and advised against parking vehicles in such areas to prevent accidents.
