Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh highlighted the importance of organic fertilizers, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for eco-friendly agriculture. He expressed concerns over the risks posed by chemical fertilizers to health and the environment, urging farmers to shift towards organic alternatives.
At the ‘State Krishi Mela 2026’, Singh praised Sikkim’s achievement as India’s first fully organic farming state, achieved through government and public collaboration. The event focused on promoting balanced fertilizer use for healthier crops and soils, advocating a gradual reduction in chemical fertilizer dependency.
Singh disclosed plans by the Agriculture Department to allocate 400 hectares for organic product cultivation and encouraged farmers to adopt multiple-cropping practices for enhanced productivity. Recognizing agriculture as a key economic sector, he emphasized the potential for increased production and revenue through such initiatives.
Vice-Chancellor Anupam Mishra of Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal, commended Manipur’s Agriculture Department for promoting balanced fertilizer use. Mishra stressed the importance of soil health for farmers’ prosperity, emphasizing the need for sustainable farming practices.
The Chief Minister unveiled a magazine showcasing farmers’ success stories and distributed Natural Farming (NF) Scope Certificates and natural farming products. He inaugurated the Manipur Seed and Organic Certification Agency (MASOCA) to enhance seed production and quality certification in the state, signing an MoA with CAU for natural farming certification.
Agricultural machinery, including 57 tractors under the Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanisation (SMAM), was distributed to 189 beneficiaries during the program, with a total outlay of Rs 432.13 lakh. Singh also honored outstanding farmers with state-level awards for their significant contributions to the agricultural sector.
