A wedding feast in Babadiya Noabad village, Madhya Pradesh’s Sehore district, turned into a nightmare as over 80 people fell ill due to food poisoning. Guests experienced symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain after consuming the food, leading to chaos and panic in the village. The situation escalated rapidly as more guests exhibited signs of distress, overwhelming the local healthcare facilities.
The Ichhawar Community Health Centre was inundated with patients by Wednesday night, with medical teams working urgently to treat those affected. Dedicated wards were set up for food poisoning cases, but the high number of patients forced some to receive treatment in corridors due to bed shortages. Dr. Sudhir Dehariya, the Chief Medical Health Officer of Sehore, confirmed that 80 individuals were admitted and treated for food poisoning, with most expected to be discharged soon.
Concerns were raised about the elderly individuals who seemed to suffer more severe effects from the food poisoning incident. Suspicions arose regarding the quality of the food served, particularly focusing on Gulab Jamuns made from Mawa (condensed milk solids) as the potential cause. Villagers and relatives suggested that the symptoms worsened after consuming these sweets, hinting at possible adulteration or use of expired ingredients in their preparation.
Health and Food Department teams swiftly responded to the situation, collecting samples of the suspected food items for detailed analysis. The exact cause of the food poisoning, whether due to bacterial contamination, chemical adulteration, or expired ingredients, will be determined once the laboratory test results are available, according to Dr. Dehariya.
