Political defections in Kerala are not new, but the recent trend has seen media professionals and TV debaters, traditionally seen as neutral, crossing over to active politics. One notable example is Reji Lukose, a familiar face on Malayalam TV debates known for his Left-leaning views, who recently joined the BJP. Lukose’s move highlights a broader shift in Kerala’s political landscape, where opinion-makers are transitioning into partisan roles.
Lukose explained his decision by criticizing the current political scenario in Kerala, stating that the state needs a more development-focused approach. He emphasized that Kerala is facing challenges due to the exodus of young people in search of better opportunities, warning against becoming an aging society. Lukose affirmed his commitment to the BJP, emphasizing the importance of development over ideological rigidity.
The CPI(M) distanced itself from Lukose, clarifying that he was never formally associated with the party and cautioning against his portrayal as a Left supporter in media discussions. Lukose’s shift was anticipated as he began taking stances contrary to the CPI(M)’s usual positions on certain issues. As Kerala gears up for elections, Lukose’s switch underscores the growing influence of formal party politics on individuals who once shaped political narratives in the media.
