Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma reiterated Meghalaya’s dedication to developing a top-notch sports environment and empowering youth through sports at the Meghalaya Sports Conclave 2026 in Shillong. He emphasized that the state’s investment in sports goes beyond just winning medals, focusing on youth development and societal transformation. Sangma highlighted Meghalaya’s progress in becoming a leading destination for sports infrastructure development, with around 240 projects completed or in progress and plans for over 500 projects by 2028.
The Chief Minister emphasized that hosting the 39th National Games in 2027 is part of a broader effort to establish a lasting sports culture and talent nurturing ecosystem in Meghalaya. He noted a significant shift in mindset within the state, enabling it to dream big, host major events, and compete nationally. Sangma also mentioned the ongoing construction of India’s largest football stadium as a symbol of Meghalaya’s ambition to become a prominent sports hub, acknowledging the challenges ahead while expressing confidence in the state’s progress.
Sangma highlighted the government’s talent development initiatives, with over 50,000 athletes identified through scouting programs since June 2025 and more than 1,200 athletes currently undergoing structured training. Meghalaya has allocated Rs 72.5 crore for Team Meghalaya’s preparations for the National Games, showcasing its commitment to athlete development and competitive excellence. The Chief Minister concluded by emphasizing that Meghalaya’s sports legacy will be judged not only by achievements but also by the opportunities provided to youth and the sustainable ecosystem built for future generations.
